Centering Navigation Bar (Menu Items) In Headway 3.4.1

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the new Headway improvements!  But, there has been some growing pain learning how to do the old stuff I used to do in my sleep.  One of them:  Centering the text of the navigation bar (or “Menu Items”) in the new Headway interface.  After looking in all the obvious places over and over, I finally found it in a non-obvious place and thought I would try to save someone the headache.

In the Visual Editor, click on the “Manage” tab (no, it’s NOT in the “DESIGN” tab!) in the upper left.  Mouse over the navigation area (referred to as a “block”).  Mousing over wil cause some options to opo up on the block.  In the upper left of the block, you will see what looks like a mixing board graphic.  Scroll one and it reads “Click to see options for this block.”  Click.

This opens configuration options on the bottom of the page.  It should have “Navigation Block [x]” listed on the top of the Config panel.  TO the left of that panel, you have several options.  Click on “Orientation” (OK< you could have guessed that at this point) and you will see an “alignment” drop down box with the usual options.  Don’t forget to hit the “Save” button in the upper right before leaving the Manager area.

So, in short:  Visual Editor > Manager > Config Options of Navigation Mar > Orientation > Alignment > Select Your Fav!> Hit “Save”

OK, good luck and let me know if I rescued you!

What If I Want My Home Page To Be My Posts Page, But I Want To Call It Something Other Than “Home?”

DIfficulty:   Super Easy

Terms You’ll Need To Know:
Posts Page  A page that you assign (in SETTINGS > READING) to show your posts as a rolling list with the newest post showing at the top.  It’s similar to a Facebook Wall.

Static Page A page you create in “Pages” section.

Front Page This is your landing page or the first page that automatically pops up when someone goes to your main URL.

This is kind of a continuation of my article “How Do I Find My Missing Home Page?”  You may want to read that article first if you haven’t set up menus for your tabs or set up a new page for your Posts Page.  If you have no idea whatI just said here, read the above article first.

OK, I just figured this one out, so I figured I should share it because there is someone out there with the same issue.

But, in this case, you’ve already created a new page for your Posts Page.  And, you’ve named it something other than “Home.”  Let’s say you named it “News.” Maybe you had another page, like your “About Me” page assigned as your static landing page.   This scenario is outlined in the article mentioned above.

But, now you decide that you want your rolling feed (aka your Posts Page) as your landing page.  In my case, my client really liked the name “CRYER” (as in Town Cryer) for the posts page.  But, they now wanted it to be the landing page.  It sounds simple, but when you go to SETTINGS > READING and you try:

1.  To make “Front Page Displays :  Your Latests Posts,” then the Home page will now be your Posts Page, but it will be called “Home” and there is no place to change it (that I am aware of)–this is a default name determined by WP.

so next you try:

2.  “Front Page Displays : A Static Page” and you set your Front Page to “News” and you set your Posts Page to “News.”  And you pat yourself on the back for being clever.  But when you hit SAVE, you get a warning box telling you that the FRONT PAGE and the POSTS PAGE should not be the same!  In desperation, you try it anyway.  But it just defaults to another page as your landing page.

So, here’s the solution:
First, select  “Front Page Displays : A Static Page” and set your Front Page to “–Select–” and you set your Posts Page to “News.”  I guess it just bypasses the front page since you’ve left it blank and assumes you want your Posts Page to also be your landing page!
